  82. "The way it was supposed to be" is LIVE, extemporaneously (or
  83. INtemporaneously, as it were).  It already happened the way it
  84. was supposed to; the live CD (or any other recreation, be it tapes,
  85. interactive CD-ROM, stage play, operetta, whatever) isn't subject
  86. to any "right-or-wrong" restrictions.  I think we can all agree
  87. that the magical appeal of Phish is the live show, and that magic
  88. does not stem solely from what's coming out of the PA - it's the
  89. raw energy of the crowd, the Topher lights, the sweet smell of
  90. burning seeds and the animal fragrance of Bud, sweat and patchouli.
  91. It's not knowing whether the strobe lights will EVER stop, whether
  92. that little hook you heard two seconds ago will bloom into a jam
  93. that has never been heard anywhere else, whether you're going to
  94. hear the first Brother in three years.  Dare we even attempt to
  95. reproduce this whole-body'n'mind experience on a CD?  In the
  96. words of Frank Zappa: "You just can't do it."
  97.  
  98. \That is one of the reasons why I don't buy boot CDs either, you 
  99. \can't listen to a full set on it.  
  100.  
  101. 90% of first sets will fit onto a CD.  Over half of second sets
  102. will fit on a CD.  Bootleg CDs shouldn't be bought by ANYONE for
  103. the simple reason that it steals from the band and it jeopardizes
  104. live taping.
  105.  
  106. \THere is something lost by sampling from concerts.  We all have boots that 
  107. \sound good, now why do we want a CD that doesn't promote one of the best 
  108. \things about Phish, namely that a live show includes the high points and 
  109. \low points and that mix within a show is what makes each show different 
  110. \and special...

  112. The CD isn't being pressed for us Phish.netters who already have
  113. access to live tapes; it's being released to the world at large,
  114. to the other 300,000 (?) people who only have the CDs, who have
  115. never been to a show, and would like to hear what it's about.
  116. The idea of plopping a whole show down, warts and all, is quite
  117. unappealing to me - after all, if I want to hear it, I'll just
  118. get the tape.  Creating, nay, CRAFTING a live album with selections
  119. spanning an entire tour allows a certain amount of creativity to
  120. be enacted by the artists, after the fact - Frank Zappa has many
  121. releases which are like this, live performances of songs with
  122. a solo from here and a bridge from there and a chorus from
  123. elsewhere, and they sound fantastic, because the songs sound
  124. like what HE envisioned them to sound like.

  126. To be honest, I'm rather disappointed in the way that the DLCD
  127. is apparently being assembled.  In fact, I would have to retroactively
  128. agree with Stew when he says that we might as well just go to the
  129. tape if we want to hear the songs - if there's nothing unique
  130. or new about the music, a DLDAT could be generated using audience
  131. recordings of the same tracks that appear on the CD.  I had
  132. envisioned, and still hope there's time to consider, a melange
  133. of music which is uniquely Phish and uniquely NOT a live CD -
  134. with individual tracks of each instrument for each show, the
  135. possibility exists for a set of compositions which are completely
  136. unlike anything we've ever heard.  What I'm looking for is something
  137. where digital technology is used to edit together some auditory
  138. bizarreness to create non-Phish music with Phish music as the
  139. building blocks.
  140.  
  141. Anyway, it's hard to describe, but hopefully you get my drift.
  142. Unfortunately, the assembly of such a release would be extremely
  143. time-consuming, and I think Phish would want to focus their
  144. efforts elsewhere - practice, new songs, gigging, gardening,
  145. whatever.

  282. I don't care if he is moving.  He arranged these trades in EARLY
  283. DECEMBER.  2 months ago.  He told us he would use 2-day delivery.
  284. He should have had the tapes made when he made the offer.  Even if
  285. he didn't, does it really take 2 months to make one tape.  If he
  286. was moving, when would he set up a ton of trades?  The whole situation
  287. is just stupid, and he screwed a lot of people over.  I would be
  288. satisfied if my tapes do come in the future, but still, he totally
  289. deceived a lot of people making us think it would be a "QUICK, EASY,
  290. TRADE" as he advertised.

  330. Fact #1: Trey did say that they would never play in a venue larger than
  331. Madison Square Garden. (It remains to be seen if that will actually happen.)
  332. Fact #2: I think it is a fairly safe bet that they will no longer do bars
  333. unless it is in Bora Bora. There might be some spots in the US (or overseas)
  334. where they could get away with it, certainly not in the East...

  348. I just read the other day that if someone asked who was who in phish (from a
  349. picture) that you could say Trey has been likened to Kermit the Frog (with
  350. facial hair), Page has been likened to Fozzy the Bear, Fish has been likened to
  351. Animal, and Mike has been likened to Sam the Eagle. I think it would be funny
  352. if phish had a show and they all came out in the costumes of the Muppet they
  353. each resemble. Or if they ever came out with a video (i mean another one - i
  354. haven't seen Down With Disease yet) to wear Muppet costumes while they play
  355. their instruments. Uh huh huh - that'd be cool.
