Stew, The Dude of Nice <gstewart@students.wisc.edu> is concerned:
\... I have mixed feelings about a sampling from different shows. Mainly,
\there is something in a full show, listening to it the way it was supposed
\to be.
"The way it was supposed to be" is LIVE, extemporaneously (or
INtemporaneously, as it were). It already happened the way it
was supposed to; the live CD (or any other recreation, be it tapes,
interactive CD-ROM, stage play, operetta, whatever) isn't subject
to any "right-or-wrong" restrictions. I think we can all agree
that the magical appeal of Phish is the live show, and that magic
does not stem solely from what's coming out of the PA - it's the
raw energy of the crowd, the Topher lights, the sweet smell of
burning seeds and the animal fragrance of Bud, sweat and patchouli.
It's not knowing whether the strobe lights will EVER stop, whether
that little hook you heard two seconds ago will bloom into a jam
that has never been heard anywhere else, whether you're going to
hear the first Brother in three years. Dare we even attempt to
reproduce this whole-body'n'mind experience on a CD? In the
words of Frank Zappa: "You just can't do it."
\That is one of the reasons why I don't buy boot CDs either, you
\can't listen to a full set on it.
90% of first sets will fit onto a CD. Over half of second sets
will fit on a CD. Bootleg CDs shouldn't be bought by ANYONE for
the simple reason that it steals from the band and it jeopardizes
live taping.
\THere is something lost by sampling from concerts. We all have boots that
\sound good, now why do we want a CD that doesn't promote one of the best
\things about Phish, namely that a live show includes the high points and
\low points and that mix within a show is what makes each show different
\and special...
The CD isn't being pressed for us Phish.netters who already have
access to live tapes; it's being released to the world at large,
to the other 300,000 (?) people who only have the CDs, who have
never been to a show, and would like to hear what it's about.
The idea of plopping a whole show down, warts and all, is quite
unappealing to me - after all, if I want to hear it, I'll just
get the tape. Creating, nay, CRAFTING a live album with selections
spanning an entire tour allows a certain amount of creativity to
be enacted by the artists, after the fact - Frank Zappa has many
releases which are like this, live performances of songs with
a solo from here and a bridge from there and a chorus from
elsewhere, and they sound fantastic, because the songs sound
like what HE envisioned them to sound like.
To be honest, I'm rather disappointed in the way that the DLCD
is apparently being assembled. In fact, I would have to retroactively
agree with Stew when he says that we might as well just go to the
tape if we want to hear the songs - if there's nothing unique
or new about the music, a DLDAT could be generated using audience
recordings of the same tracks that appear on the CD. I had
envisioned, and still hope there's time to consider, a melange
of music which is uniquely Phish and uniquely NOT a live CD -
with individual tracks of each instrument for each show, the
possibility exists for a set of compositions which are completely
unlike anything we've ever heard. What I'm looking for is something
where digital technology is used to edit together some auditory
bizarreness to create non-Phish music with Phish music as the
building blocks.
Anyway, it's hard to describe, but hopefully you get my drift.
Unfortunately, the assembly of such a release would be extremely
time-consuming, and I think Phish would want to focus their
efforts elsewhere - practice, new songs, gigging, gardening,
whatever.

I don't care if he is moving. He arranged these trades in EARLY
DECEMBER. 2 months ago. He told us he would use 2-day delivery.
He should have had the tapes made when he made the offer. Even if
he didn't, does it really take 2 months to make one tape. If he
was moving, when would he set up a ton of trades? The whole situation
is just stupid, and he screwed a lot of people over. I would be
satisfied if my tapes do come in the future, but still, he totally
deceived a lot of people making us think it would be a "QUICK, EASY,
TRADE" as he advertised.

Actually, I would say they already ARE mainstream. They did play Letterman,
not that that MAKES them mainstream, but face it, they are a LOT more
popular than they were in 1992, let's say.

Well, there is certainly no need for name-calling just because someone does
NOT like Phish. Personally, I do not care for RS in general and will always
love Phish (unless they do a Pepsi commercial ;-)

Fact #1: Trey did say that they would never play in a venue larger than
Madison Square Garden. (It remains to be seen if that will actually happen.)
Fact #2: I think it is a fairly safe bet that they will no longer do bars
unless it is in Bora Bora. There might be some spots in the US (or overseas)
where they could get away with it, certainly not in the East...
Why are you so afraid of other people liking Phish?

I just read the other day that if someone asked who was who in phish (from a
picture) that you could say Trey has been likened to Kermit the Frog (with
facial hair), Page has been likened to Fozzy the Bear, Fish has been likened to
Animal, and Mike has been likened to Sam the Eagle. I think it would be funny
if phish had a show and they all came out in the costumes of the Muppet they
each resemble. Or if they ever came out with a video (i mean another one - i
haven't seen Down With Disease yet) to wear Muppet costumes while they play
their instruments. Uh huh huh - that'd be cool.
Peace, Poop
